Jean A. Sawtelle, age 85, of Springfield, Maine, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born February 11, 1940, in Springfield, the 12th child of Austin and Gertrude (Orr) Ham.
Jean graduated from Lee Academy in 1958 and went on to graduate from Eastern Academy of Beauty Culture in Bangor in 1959, fulfilling her dream of becoming a beautician. She then was employed at the Beauty Nook in Houlton for five years. She married Hazen Sawtelle in 1963 and became a stay-at-home mom to raise their three children. She also became a care giver to her mother during that time after her mother became ill. But her favorite role came later in life when she became affectionately known as Mammy. Together, Hazen and Jean owned and operated the Springfield Fairgrounds and the Lakeview Restaurant in Carroll for many years. Some of her favorite hobbies were cooking, sewing, knitting, and singing. She will be remembered for her squash donuts and the countless afghans that she loved making for family and friends. She was a member of the Springfield Community Chapel where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir until she was unable to attend due to her husband's health. Both her and Hazen enjoyed sports and followed their children and grandchildren throughout their athletic careers. Jean could always be found at sporting events or family gatherings with her video camera in hand. Jean will be remembered as a diehard Yankees fan, something both her and Hazen passed on to their children and grandchildren.
Remaining to cherish Jean's memory are her children; Lynn McLaughlin, Valerie (Glenn) Stevens, Bub (Lorraine) Sawtelle, and adopted daughter Judi Drake, grandchildren; Amy (Gary) Renaud, Jill (Matt) Grass, Jason (Kerri) Stevens, Laci (Ben) Damon, Dustin (Amanda) Sawtelle, Alyssa Stevens, and Kaylie (fiancé Hayden) Sawtelle, great grandchildren; Maxwell Grass, Kammi Stevens, Jackson Stevens, Alexander Kozerow, Penelope Damon, Harper Weatherbee, and another great grandson on the way, her siblings; Linda (Ronald) Doane and Joyce Tozier, and a special life long friend, Pat (Drake) Emery. She was predeceased by her parents, son-in-law Jeff McLaughlin, her siblings; Dorothy Comer, Blanche White, Harold Ham, Ruth Gibbs, Catherine Granville, Marjorie Budge, Norman Ham, Lawrence Ham, Keith Ham, and two infant brothers.
A celebration of life will be held for family and friends on November 1, 2025, at 11am at Bub's home in Springfield.
