Jean Louise Haack Stevens, of Doylestown, PA died on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at Doylestown Hospital, surrounded by family, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. She was 83.
She was the beloved wife of 47 years to the late William Harris Stevens who passed away in 2012.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Edward Gustav Haack and Dorothy Grace Finkbeiner Haack, and mother of the late Timothy Harris Stevens.
Jean grew up in Narberth, PA, and attended Drexel University where she earned an undergraduate degree in home economics and a Masters degree in library science. After marrying Bill, who was a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army, they moved several times, eventually ending up in Okinawa, where their daughter Julie was born. Upon returning, they settled in Southampton, PA before moving to Doylestown in 1978, a community they both adored.
Jean worked briefly as a librarian in the Central Bucks School District before taking a position in the Bucks County Free Library system. She worked in the Quakertown, Yardley, and Lower Makefield branches before becoming the head librarian in Levittown. Eventually, she got her dream position as head librarian in Doylestown, retiring in 2006.
Jean was a talented quilter and seamstress. She made her daughters' clothes for years, including beautiful prom and formal dresses, and later made doll clothes for her granddaughters. She had an incredible eye for color, and made the most beautiful quilts – she was quite well known for her "I Spy" quilts which she made for her grandchildren, and for the children and grandchildren of family and friends!
A woman of keen intellect and intellectual curiosity, Jean was a member of a local Questers chapter, where she served as program chair for many years. She was active in the American Association of University Women. She also participated in the Doylestown Country Club book club where she led discussions and was instrumental in choosing books in keeping with the group's theme of strong independent women.
Another of her lifelong loves was playing bridge. She was a member of Doylestown Country Club where she played competitive bridge in three area country club leagues, participated in Couples Bridge, Sanctioned Bridge and the Women's Golf and Bridge Charity Day to benefit Doylestown Health.
Her great love though was people, and she delighted in conversation and in learning more about anyone she met. She collected friends wherever she went. She loved to be active and always out and about doing something, whether it was bridge, or her Tuesday breakfast group, or her Librarians Lunch group. Her illness was very difficult for her as she was unable to do many of these activities, but her wonderful, large group of devoted friends often brought the party to her.
Put simply, she was a widely respected, amazing woman, and she will be forever missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughters, Julia Longstreet Davis and her husband John of Doylestown, Jessica Joan Darling and her husband Timothy of Perkasie, her daughter-in-law Tara Stevens of Doylestown, her brothers John Haack and his wife Connie of White Plains, New York, Edward Haack and his wife Shih Ling of Groveland, Massachusetts, and her sister Joan Reeder of Kingston, New Hampshire. She is also survived by her five grandchildren; Sage Thomas and Faith Violet Stevens, Samantha Jean Darling, and Catherine Longstreet and Grace Louise Davis.
Jean's family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 from 9:30am until her Memorial Service at 11:00am at Doylestown Presbyterian Church, 127 East Court Street, Doylestown, PA 18901. Jean loved bright, vibrant colors, so the family is requesting that those attending her service celebrate her by wearing something colorful. Her interment in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, with her husband, will be held privately.
