Obituary published on Legacy.com by Martin-Dugger Funeral Home - Elk City on Nov. 9, 2025.
Jeanelda Jo Smith was born on December 03, 1934 to parents Everett and Nettie (Kenney) Moore. Jeanelda graduated from earth into Heaven on Friday, November 07, 2025. She passed peacefully at her home in rural Roger Mills county north of Hammon, Oklahoma. She lived to be 90 years old.
She attended primary school at Moorewood Oklahoma where her family the Moores were prominent in many aspects of the community. Both of her parents were schoolteachers and later her father became the postman. The family along with Jeanelda ran the local store. In her elementary years Jeanelda would catch a train from Moorewood to Hammon to take piano lessons. When Jeanelda entered 7th grade, she began attending Leedey Public School where she graduated. During these school years she put her faith in Jesus and was baptized.
On May 15, 1951, at the age of 16 she eloped with Shannon X Smith, 26 who drove a motorcycle and had just returned from service in the United States Navy.
In a few years they established their home place above the creek bed below a Quartermaster creek flood control dam. They reclaimed the chicken house previously used to make moonshine by a neighbor.
The summer after marriage, Shannon bought a Massey Harris tractor in Anadarko, Oklahoma that apparently didn't run. The ride home required a two day journey towing this tractor behind a pickup with an overnight stop with family in Cordell. Jeanelda drove the pickup and certainly developed a unique way to filter the communications being received from Shannon in the tractor behind.
Jeanelda and Shannon were partners focused on their farming, milking and ranching and saved their money to enlarge their farming and ranching endeavors. Jeanelda spent many hours on the tractor plowing and planting, while their family was growing. When Shelly was born with physical handicaps, Jeanelda shifted her focus toward nurturing her development and well being.
Jeanelda always valued education and was enrolled at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma taking university courses throughout the years in the focus areas of medicine and piano performance. She played an important role supporting family members who pursued higher education.
Jeanelda played piano and taught Sunday school classes at the Hammon Methodist church for many years. Her church family was near and dear to her and provided an ongoing source of friendship and strength throughout her life.
Both Jeanelda and Shannon had determined personalities. When a new family car was needed, Shannon ordered Jeanelda to go to town and buy an American made car with a gas motor and 14 ½ in standard tires. Jeanelda quietly acknowledged his suggestion but returned home driving a white, diesel, Mercedes Benz sedan, with 15" tires. Jeanelda drove this car for fourteen years while Shannon only rode in it for the last eleven years. The next time a new car was needed, Shannon accompanied Jeanelda to give his input when they purchased a new, black, diesel, Mercedes Benz.
Jeanelda and Shannon welcomed son Scott Smith in 1952, daughter Shawn Smith Walters in 1960, and daughter Shelly Jo Smith born in 1971. Jeanelda taught her children about the love of God and passed down an enduring legacy of faith. She was a prayer warrior and her family was blessed by her example.
Jeanelda's service will be held at the Methodist Church in Hammon, Oklahoma 2:00 pm on Monday, November 10, 2025. She will be laid to rest at Dewey cemetery alongside her husband, daughter, and grandson.
