Jeanette Marie (Poling) Peterson, 86, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025. She was born October 13, 1938, in Marshalltown, the daughter of Marie and Harold Poling. Jeanette, the oldest of three sisters, grew up in Albion and for a period in Laurel where she developed strong roots in family, faith, and community.
She graduated from Albion High School in 1956 and married Elmer Peterson on May 20, 1959. Soon after, Elmer was drafted into the Army and stationed in Anchorage, Alaska where both Elmer and Jeanette created lasting memories.
After Elmer’s service, they returned to the family farm near Marietta, where they worked together for over 60 years—a place Jeanette cherished deeply.
Jeanette was a lifelong member of the Albion United Methodist Church, where she contributed to the Evening Circle Club. She also was a member of the Marietta Ladies Club serving in several roles.
Known for her kindness, thoughtfulness, and resilience, Jeanette’s legacy will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She had a deep love for the farm, where every corner held a special memory of hard work and care. Her devotion to her family was equally strong, with her nurturing spirit always guiding, supporting, and lovingly shaping the lives of those she held dear.
The family is deeply grateful to The Willows and Harmony for their compassionate care during the past few years, as Jeanette faced health challenges with strength and grace.
Jeanette is survived by her husband Elmer: sisters, Patricia (Rod) Western and Linda Carpenter; her children, Marylynn (Chuck) Murray and Dennis (Jennifer) Peterson; grandchildren, Luke (Marielle) Murray, Sylvia Murray (Richard Palmer), Jacquelynn Murray (Jack Enright), Alena (Ethan) Heimer, Ellissa Peterson, and Anders Peterson; and her great-grandchildren, Adeline, Eloise, and Theodore Heimer. She was preceded in death by her parents; nephew, David Uhde; niece Anne Doyle; and brother-in-law, Chuck Carpenter.
A visitation will be held at Mitchell Family Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will take place afterward at Marietta Cemetery, near Albion.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mayo Clinic, Marietta Cemetery Association, or Suncrest Hospice.
