Obituary for William Geoffrey Hollis
Jeff Hollis passed away February 3, 2025. Jeff was born on August 18, 1944, in Columbus, Georgia. He graduated from Decatur High School in 1963 before attending Carson-Newman University, where he played football and served as team captain. After graduating from Carson-Newman in 1967, he embarked on a 43-year coaching career at many schools around metro Atlanta that include The Lovett School, Georgia Tech, Wheeler, Cherokee, Northgate, North Forsyth, Pope, and Lumpkin County High Schools. Coach Hollis made an impact on countless players and coaches.
Jeff was preceded in death by his father, M.B. Hollis; his mother, Polly Hollis; his brother, Larry Hollis; nephew, Mike Hollis; and sister in-law Joan Givens. He is survived by his wife, Anne Hollis; his son, Matthew Hollis; his daughter-in-law, Angela Hollis; and his granddaughters, Anna Hollis and Addy Hollis. He is also survived by his niece, Jennifer Hollis Hardeman; his sister-in-law, Carol Givens McGinnis and brother-in-law, Bill; his nephew, Larry Evans and wife, Becca, and their children, Wren and Gibson; his nephew, Daniel and wife, Cindy; and his grand dog Weezy.
Outside of coaching, Jeff loved the outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish, and looked forward to the yearly "Hollis Camping Trip". More than anything, he enjoyed the people he shared those moments with. Jeff looked forward to being at any event his son and granddaughters were involved with. He always wanted to be at their concerts, games, and even BMX races. Jeff married his high school sweetheart, Anne Givens, and were married 63 years at the time of his passing. The time spent with his wife, Anne, traveling, going to Gatlinburg, and simply living day to day was what he loved the most.
Memorial service will be February 28, 2025 at Dahlonega Funeral Home, 20 Gibson RD, Dahlonega, GA 30533. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM with service at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations may be made to:

When I came to Lovett I had coached 2 years as a 9th grade coach at Rossville Ga . That first year Coach Conley made me defensive coordinator and kept an eye on me but towards the end kinda let me go. Coach Conley retired and Jeff took over . From day one Jeff took me under his wing . Gave me a chance to be his Defensive Coordinator and basically let me go. He taught me everyday how to coach hard and expect a lot of our players . I felt tough just being around him . We coached together played softball together (Sweathogs ) taught together and partied together. I even had his back a couple times late at night. Enough said . My mentor and friend I will never forget.

First knew of Coach Hollis when he whipped me into shape during Lovett football! He was a beast! Always inspiring and ready to motivate the entire team. Lovett Lions, Region Champs in 1979 and 1980. He had an incredible impact on so many kids. Thank you, Coach! You will be missed. Will Jordan, Lovett, Class of 1981

I played football under Jeff Hollis at Wheeler High School. He was a man´s man, a straight shooter, and did not pull any punches when it came to letting you know what he thought of you. He was one of the reasons I joined the Marine Corps out of high school. I appreciate who he was and his example as a family man. May he rest in God´s grace and may God continue to bless his wife and family. Job well done coach.

Coach Hollis was truly a mentor, leader and friend. His candor, courage and compassion were inspirational. As his first athlete of color at Lovett in 1978, his influence, personal commitment to my success as well as his candor shaped my life, and I will forever be grateful.

First met Jeff at Lovett as a 7th grader. Became a lifelong friend through football and baseball at Lovett. After graduation, had 10-plus years of fun through our softball team, the Sweathogs.
