Jeffery A. Hackney, a loving husband, father, papa, and friend of many, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born in Abilene, TX, June 4, 1949, to the late John and Mozelle Hackney, Jeff grew up in Calumet City, IL and attended Thornton Fractional North High School, where he fell in love with sports, primarily by playing baseball.
After high school, Jeff earned a Bachelor's Degree in Accountancy at Northern Illinois University, where he met his greatest love, his wife of over 53 years, Diane L. Hackney (nee Brown). Jeff and Diane resided mainly in Naperville during their marriage, where they are members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
Shortly after college, Jeff was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves from 1972-1979 where he met lifelong friends. During that time, he also earned a Master's in Taxation at DePaul University in Chicago.
As a certified public accountant (CPA), Jeff spent most of his career employed by Crowe LLP in Oak Brook, IL.
After his retirement in 2015, you often found Jeff on the golf course or cheering on his Chicago Cubs, but mostly, you would find him being his family's biggest fan. He rarely missed a ball game, performance or a simple family dinner. He spent his entire life giving to his family, and he will never be forgotten.
In addition to Diane, Jeff leaves behind his proudest accomplishment, his adoring family. Jeff was a loving father to Beth (Kristopher) Tukker of Aurora, IL and Sara (Bill) Hackney of Wheaton, IL. He was a proud Papa to Jacob, Kyle, Zachary and Alyssa Tukker, and Will and Sadie Hackney. Jeff was the beloved son-in-law of the late Lloyd and Phyllis Brown, and a fond brother, brother-in-law, cousin, uncle, great-uncle and friend. Jeff will also be dearly missed by his puppies, Clark and Sophie.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, 1:00-5:00 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL 60540.
A celebration of Jeff's life will be held Sunday, July 20, 2025, 2:00pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1310 Shepherd Dr., Naperville, IL 60565, (630) 961-9220.

I already posted one memory, but I forgot to mention Jeff's musical accomplishments. Jeff took piano lessons as an adult and mastered difficult, classical pieces. He was kind enough to refer his piano instructor, and I took lessons for a year or so.

I remember a student recital where we both played. I performed something like "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" and Jeff played a demanding Chopin or Mozart composition.

Jeff and I were partners at Crowe LLP.

Tall, trim, and articulate, Jeff had a strong executive presence. Jeff was a tax expert who could explain complicated issues in plain English.

On top of his more than ample client workload, Jeff was kind enough to prepare our personal tax returns. Although the service was worth a lot, the fee was usually just a dozen golf balls.

Jeff had a quick wit and was good company. He was also a good athlete.

I remember a softball game at the park next to our Oak Brook office. The dimensions were distant, and Jeff was the only one who connected for a homer over the fence. I was quite impressed. Jeff batted left-handed, and he obviously had power and a good swing.

Jeff had a full life, with a wonderful wife and family. We only wish that Jeff could have had a much longer and healthier retirement to enjoy with Diane, family, and friends.
