Jereline ‘Jerrie’ Scruggs Clarke, 88, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother, joined her family in Heaven on July 12, 2024. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Aubrey Fitzhugh Clarke. She was the oldest of ten children born to the late Rosalee and Jerry Scruggs and was sister of the late, Jane Davis, Joyce Hill, and Jerry Wade Scruggs. She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Eskew (Randy) of St Simon’s Island, GA and Katrina Wells (David) of Victoria, VA; grandchildren Katlyn Moseley (Bobby) and Hunter Wells all of Kenbridge: great-grandchildren Kelly, Gunner, Kerri, Liam, and Katey; step-grandchildren Miranda Mulligan (Jason) and Joshua Eskew (Tori), all of Lexington, SC, and step-great grandchildren, Berkeley, Miles, Liam, and Perry. Also surviving are siblings, Arlene Hazelwood, Juanita Estep, Julia Jeter, Larry Scruggs, Ronnie Scruggs and Bernard Scruggs; her earthly angels, Mary Foster of Kenbridge and April Easter of Amelia Courthouse. Jerrie loved her family without limits, never hesitated in her Christian faith, and thrived on serving others. A dedicated member of the Kenbridge Ebenezer Presbyterian Church for nearly seventy years, Jerrie held several positions within her congregation. Over five decades, she volunteered as a driver of family, friends, and acquaintances for their cancer treatments in Richmond, she loved being an assistant Girl Scout Leader while her daughters were involved. Gardening, sewing, cooking/canning, fishing, and travel brought joy to her heart. For more than forty years she worked with the women of her church to plan, prepare and serve an annual spaghetti supper. After Jerrie and Aubrey stopped raising tobacco, they planted blackberry vines on their farm, which continue to produce berries. Many from the community enjoyed Jerrie’s blackberries and a few lucky ones delighted in Jerrie’s locally famous blackberry roll. She used her sewing skills for seventy-five years to make clothes, wedding and bridesmaid dresses, bedspreads, curtains, repair cheerleader uniforms, make stuffed animals and cabbage dolls. She worked as a home beautician for 38 years and never passed up a chance to go fishing in a local pond, Jeanette’s pier or Avalon in the Outer Banks. Jerrie was known by everyone for her love of animals, frequently rescuing wild animals and stray dogs and cats. She nursed back to health many a hunting dog with puppies, a blue jay named Tweety, a few ‘possums and a few squirrels. Jerrie awoke smiling every morning, ready to enjoy God’s day. She truly saw the good within everyone. The family will receive friends at the Clarke Funeral Home in Kenbridge, Thursday, July 18, 2024 from 10am until start of services at 11am. Interment in the Kenbridge Heights Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider memorial donations to the Meherrin SPCA, C/O Ray Elliott, 797 Starlight Lane, Kenbridge, VA 23944
