Obituary published on Legacy.com by Merkle Funeral Service, Inc. - North Monroe on Nov. 5, 2025.
Jerome Leroy Masserent was born March 29, 1934, in
Monroe, Michigan. He was one of eight children, the only boy born to Leo Masserant and Luella (Hoffman) Masserant. He enlisted in the United States Army where he obtained his GED. He proudly and honorably served his country.
Jerome was a faithful man of God, having been a lifelong member of St. Charles Catholic Church, Newport, where he married his bride, Janis Johnston. They settled near the shores of Lake Erie where he provided for his family while working in the Roll Shop of McLouth Steel's Gibraltar plant for thirty-nine years.
Jerome was loyal to the Detroit Lions and the Detroit Tigers sports teams. He also enjoyed word search and jigsaw puzzles.
Jerome spent much of his time nurturing a vegetable garden. Each spring, he eagerly prepared the soil to plant tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and bell peppers. His garden was a place where he found great comfort in watching his plants grow and flourish, which he shared with neighbors and family.
Fishing was another joy that Jerome shared, especially with his sons. Together they spent many hours on Lake Erie. Their adventures occasionally took them north to the waters near Mancelona for the annual family vacation, where he enjoyed searching for Petoskey stones.
Jerome and Janis enjoyed visiting casinos, having developed a fun tradition they lovingly called their "loop." It was never about the stakes, but the pleasure of spending time together.
In his community, Jerome was widely appreciated for his volunteer work at St. Charles church and cemetery. He dedicated himself to assisting with various projects. After retirement, Jerome took pride in maintaining the cemetery grounds, a task he performed with dedication and respect for those resting there.
