Jerome E. "Jerry" Mickus Sr., 82, of Hagaman, passed away peacefully at home on Monday December 30, 2024 with his family by his side.
Born in Edwardsville, PA on June 20, 1942 a son of the late Thomas A. and Etta M. (Buyanowski) Mickus. He was raised in Amsterdam, NY attending local schools and was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School in 1960.
He served in the US Army from 1964 to 1966 during Vietnam in Buffalo NY at the Niagra Falls-Buffalo Nike Missile Battery. While in the service he was a Sharpshooter (M-14), Marksman (Carbine) and received his US Army Driver and Mechanic's Badge.
Jerry worked as a union painter working for Otto Greco Painting/Amsterdam Decorating until its closing. KPD Painting and Patenaude & Sons Inc. until retiring. He was a member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT).
Upon retirement he enjoyed working on his home in Hagaman, stamp and coin collecting and reading, especially history. Above all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Jerome was married to MaryEllen (Erschen) Mickus on August 18,1967. In addition to his beloved wife he is survived by his children, Juliet Mickus, Karen Vennett, and Jerome Mickus Jr. Grandchildren, Christopher (Ashley) Mickus, Katie, Cassandra, Shayla and Matthew Mickus, RJ, Brandy and Jaimé Mickus Jr., Kimberly, Kristina and Korey Krohn, Janelle Vennett, Jered Wilson and Jaylan Mickus along with several great-grandchildren. Brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Arthur and Darleen Erschen, Ethel Holland and Carole Rhodes. Nieces and nephews also survive.
He is predeceased by his dear sons, Jaimé J. Mickus Sr. and Anthony "Tony" Mickus along with brothers, Thomas and Richard Mickus. Brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Joyce Mickus, Robert Holland and Richard Rhodes. Thank you to the staff at St. Mary's Hospital Second Floor and Dr. Michael Sheridan and the Community Hospice for their care. Also a special thank you to Christopher and Ashley for always being there to help any time day or night.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday January 9, 2025 at 11:00AM at St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church, 51 North Pawling St., Hagaman, NY with Rev. Juanito Asperec, P.V. as celebrant. A calling hour will be held prior to the Mass on Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00AM in the church. Military honors will follow the Mass on Thursday inside the church. Jerome will be interred with his sons Jaimé and Anthony in Fairview Cemetery, Steadwell Ave, Amsterdam, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10306. [email protected].
