Jerry L. Hartzler

Jerry L. Hartzler, 67, of rural Akron, Indiana passed unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at his residence.
Jerry was born on June 2, 1957 in Peru, Indiana to the late Jerome C. and Annetta E. (Flook) Hartzler. He was a 1975 graduate of North Miami High School. He married on Jan. 17, 1976 in the Disko United Methodist Church to Debra A. Ihnen, she survives.
In earlier years, he worked for Sonoco Product, Cargill and Franger Gas. He then worked for the Fulton County Highway Department for 24 years, retiring on Jan. 1, 2023. But he was also known as a farmer. He was actively serving his community on the Athens Cemetery Board as well as the Henry Township Advisory Board for several years.
He cherished his family deeply and had a passion for farming and history. An avid storyteller and a friend to everyone, he enjoyed socializing and connecting with others. He had a particular love for auctions, especially the annual FFA Sale. Known for his appreciation of bargains, he collected tools and saved everything. He was rarely seen without his beloved cowboy boots. In years past, he was a talented musician playing the guitar and sang at the Athens Church and often could be heard whistling.
He is survived by his wife Deb Hartzler of Akron; children Diana and husband Steven Baumgart of Akron, Jennifer and husband Nathan Shewman of Akron; and Jerid Hartzler of Roann; grandchildren Hailey, Wade, Dustine, Eli, Marley, Vance, Lilyana, and Eilira; sister Angie and husband Matt Gast of Akron; nieces and nephew Amanda Powell, Clayton Riffett, and Rayanna Roxberry.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Jerome Hartzler and Annetta Robinette, brother Todd Hartzler (2013), and sister Cindy Hartzler (2024).
The funeral service will take place at 10:30 am, Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at Hartzler Funeral Home 305 West Rochester Street Akron, Indiana with Pastor David Eaton officiating.
His interment will take place in the Athens Cemetery, Athens, Indiana.
Visitation hours will be held from 3 pm to 7 pm, Monday, March 31, 2025 at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron, Indiana.
Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Henry Township Fire Department or to the Athens (Hoover) Cemetery.
