Jerry Thornton Mitchell, born on June 30, 1935, in Ft. Worth, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2024, one day shy of his 89th birthday. Jerry was the beloved son of John A. Mitchell and Nea Willey Mitchell. He grew up in Oklahoma City, OK, where he attended Classin High School and later earned his Bachelor's degree from Oklahoma University.
Jerry served his country honorably as a Corporal E-4 in the United States Marine Corps, stationed at the Marine Barracks in Washington 3, D.C., as part of the prestigious Presidential detail. For his service, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.
After his military service, Jerry pursued a successful career as a stockbroker in Dallas and later served as a Director at the YMCA in Dallas. He was also well-known in the community as a square dance caller, bringing joy and rhythm to countless dancers.
Jerry was an active member of the Baptist church and enjoyed square dancing, golfing, and traveling. His zest for life and passion for these hobbies were evident to all who knew him.
He married Patricia Jo Mitchell on February 14, 1976. Patricia predeceased Jerry, leaving behind a legacy of love and shared memories. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Richard Hugh Mitchell and Clarke E. Mitchell, and his daughter Kristi Ann Spann.
Jerry is survived by his loving children: daughter Ginger Dorsett, son Hal Hamblen and his wife Phyllis, and son Bryan Mitchell and his wife Suzanne. He leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Brad Hamblen (Michelle), Holly Hamblen, Blake Dorsett, Chase Dorsett (James), Casey Mitchell, and Michael Spann. Jerry was also a proud great-grandfather to Shawn, Jonathan, and Travis.
In honor of Jerry's memory, the family requests that donations be made to the Disabled Veterans National Foundation, reflecting his enduring respect and support for fellow veterans.
Jerry Thornton Mitchell will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of service, dedication, and joy will forever be remembered.
