Jerry Glen Porterfield age 87 passed away on August 22, 2025 in Springer New Mexico. He was born on September 4, 1937 to Harold and Lorabelle (White) Porterfield in Raton, NM. Jerry was the point guard for the Roy Longhorn's basketball team in 1955 that made it to the state tournament. He was the quarterback for the football team. Jerry was a Roy Longhorn through and through. On August 21st, the day before his passing he ask the nursing home staff to wear maroon the next day. The day he passed away he and many of the staff were wearing Roy Longhorn maroon.
He loved sports and playing cards. He was extremely competitive and whatever you were playing, Jerry's team was a good place to be. He married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Jeanette Madole on July 23, 1956 in Roy, NM. In the early years of their marriage they lived in Roy where Jerry worked at his dad's Texico Station and then for SEC hauling dry ice. Jerry served on the Roy School Board in the early 70's. In 1976 the Porterfield's moved to Dumas, Texas where he worked his way up to General Manager at Monfort, retiring in 1999 and moving back to their hometown.
Jerry was a Harding County Commissioner from 2005-2012. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Roy where he served as a mayordomo and member of the finance council for many years. He enjoyed serving his community and helping out wherever he could.
Jerry was a very devoted and involved husband, dad, grandpa and great grandpa. He cherished his family and they cherished him. We will so miss his kind heart, competitive spirit and awesome sense of humor.
He is preceded in death by his parents and step-mom, brother-Harold Don Porterfield, son-in-law James Rigoni and infant granddaughter Lorabelle Rigoni. Jerry is survived by his wife of 69 years Jeanette; Children: daughters Debra Garia and Danette Rigoni of Roy and son Dr. Stacey Porterfield and wife Susan of Medford, Oregon. Grandchildren: Darcie Clavel and husband Blair of Roy; Levi Garcia and wife Amy of Seguin, TX; Jenny Hazen and husband Cody of Roy; Danae Rigoni and husband John King of Roy; Stefanie Fischbacher and husband Corey of Roy; Anthony Rigoni and partner Christopher Wiberg of Silverton, Oregon; Andrea Rigoni and partner Amber Flynn of Albuquerque; Dalton Porterfield of Colardo Springs, CO and Carsen Porterfield of Temecula, CA; 12 great grandchildren; Two sisters Flo Roper of Castle Rock, CO, and Freddy Kirksey of Roy, NM and one brother Richard Porterfield of Las Animas, CO
The family is so grateful for all of the amazing staff at Colfax General Long Term Care and Anvoi Hospice. Special thank you to Addie Montoya.
Services will be held at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Roy on September 6th, 2025 with Rosary beginning at 9:30 am followed immediately by the funeral mass with Father Agustin Henderson as the Celebrant. Urn-bearers' are Danae Rigoni, Stefanie Fischbacher and Andrea Rigoni. Honoray urn-bearers' are Jerry's grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
