Obituary published on Legacy.com by San Juan Mortuary - Blanding on Jul. 23, 2025.
Jesse Merlin Grover was born on April 4, 1942, in
Blanding, Utah, the eldest child of Jess and Afton Grover.
He spent his early years in northern Utah and Montana, helping with livestock and milking cows-a foundation that instilled in him a lifelong work ethic and love for the land.
Merlin returned to Blanding in his youth and became actively involved in sports at San Juan High School, where he played football, basketball, track, and wrestling. He proudly participated on the school's very first football team, sparking a deep and lasting love for all things SJHS. He graduated with the Class of 1960. He went on to play one year of football at Fort Lewis College.
On June 9, 1961, Merlin married his high school sweetheart, Lou Ann Laws, in the Logan Utah Temple. The newlyweds moved to Cedar City, Utah, where Merlin attended Southern Utah University (then CSU) and earned his Associate's Degree. During their time there, their first daughter, Lou Jean, was born.
They later moved to Logan, Utah, so Merlin could continue his education at Utah State University. He majored in Animal Husbandry and minored in Chemistry. While in Logan, their second daughter, Dee Ann, was born. Merlin graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1964.
In 1965, the Grovers returned home to Blanding, where Merlin began working as a caseworker for the Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS). He earned his Master's Degree in Social Work in 1969 from the University of Utah. While living in Blanding, their family grew to include six more children: Erik, Jo Lyn, Mar Dawn, BJ, Kayela, and Preston. In 1988, Ileana joined their family from Mexico.
Merlin devoted many years to serving the families of San Juan County through his work with DCFS until retirement. He later went to work at the San Juan County Jail, until he decided to retire again.
Merlin deeply loved San Juan County and chose to spend his life here, close to his roots. Above all, his greatest devotion was to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He faithfully served in many church callings throughout his life and found great purpose in that service.
His family was his pride and joy. He was a constant presence in their lives, cheering them on at 4-H events, livestock shows, rodeos, dances, and countless sports competitions.
On July 22, 2025, Merlin passed away peacefully at his home in Blanding. He is now joyfully reunited with his beloved wife - Lou Ann, granddaughters - Lisa and Krista, siblings, parents, and dear friends who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his children: Lou Jean (Gene), Dee Ann (Carl), Erik (Janny), Ileana (Doyle), Jo Lyn (Dennis), Mar Dawn (Preston), BJ (Jeanna), Kayela (JJ), and Preston (Tara), as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry on his legacy.
The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Crofts and his team at San Juan Health Services, the Zion's Way Hospice team, the compassionate nurses from United Energy Workers and so many others who have helped over the years.
