Jimmy Phillips Obituary

Jimmy R. Phillips, 78, of Garfield, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 30, 2025, surrounded by family.

Born in Stillmore, Georgia, Jimmy served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps, rising to the rank of Sergeant. He spent most of his civilian career with the U.S. Postal Service in Swainsboro and Statesboro, retiring after many years of dedicated service.

A devoted member of Garfield United Methodist Church, Jimmy taught Sunday School for over 30 years and served faithfully as an usher. He was also a proud Mason for 46 years, serving as Past Master and Past District Deputy of the Grand Master. He was a Perpetual Member of Ridgeway Lodge No. 104 and an Honorary Member of Ogeechee Lodge No. 213. Masonic rites will be conducted in his honor.

Jimmy was known for his dry wit, fierce loyalty, and steady presence. He loved old Westerns, mystery novels, strong coffee, and quiet solitude—but his love for family ran deep. His daughter LeAnn remembers his sarcastic humor and favorite greeting, “ain’t nobody home.” His grandchildren recall blueberry picking, game shows, high-fives, and the nicknames he gave them—“Pumpkin,” “Curly Top,” and “Jumper.”

He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 49 years, Judy Lanier Phillips; his parents, Edwin and Ellie Sutton Phillips; and four siblings. He is survived by his children, Scott Lanier Phillips (Lori) and LeAnn Phillips Snellgrove (Matt); grandchildren Emily Lane (Parker), Lelah Snellgrove, and Mattie Grace Snellgrove; and siblings Clyde Moore, Rufus Phillips, and Nita McNeal.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Chapman Funeral Home in Swainsboro, GA. A graveside service will follow Friday, September 5 at 10:00 AM at Lewis Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Garfield United Methodist Church, PO Box 177, Garfield, GA 30425, and Ridgeway Lodge No. 104, 22 Outler Circle, Midville, GA 30441. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Pruitt Health Hospice for their compassionate care.

Jimmy will be remembered as intelligent, loving, and unwavering—a man who held his family together with quiet strength and enduring love.
