Obituary published on Legacy.com by Knotts Funeral Home - Sanford on Jul. 17, 2024.
Mr. Jimmy Ross Tysor was born in Goldston, NC on May 17, 1943, to the late Russell Lee and Mary Barnes Tysor. He peacefully passed away on July 17, 2024, at Liberty Commons Rehabilitation Center in
Sanford, NC. He was 81 years old.
Jimmy attended J.S. Waters School. He was raised in Roberts Chapel Baptist Church in Goldston, NC. Jimmy worked multiple jobs over his lifetime. Some of his places of employment were the following: Sprott's Brothers, Federal Spinning, Sanford Brick and Tile, The Sanford Herald, Trion, and finally retired from Lee County Public Schools as a custodian at Deep River Elementary School.
He was united in holy matrimony to Nora Ann Williams, his high school sweetheart. The union ended 54 years when the love of his life passed away. To the union were born two daughters: Charlene and Cassandra Tysor.
Have you ever heard the saying, "You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar?" Being kind to others was the foundation that Jimmy lived by. He had a very easy going, mild-mannered demeanor. People were drawn to his humble spirit and teddy bear features. Family, friends, and acquaintances would always describe him as a very sweet man. His siblings affectionately refer to him as their baby brother.
He was quick to show disapproval of rude, hateful, or spiteful behavior. If you ever wanted to rustle his feathers, make too much noise while his favorite teams were playing on the tv. He absolutely had no tolerance for distractions during a sporting event. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed basketball, baseball, football, boxing, and golf. He loved attending collegiate and professional games with his brother, Winfred (Goody) and his nephews. He also loved watching the old Westerns like Gun smoke, Bonanza, the Rifleman, Rawhide, and Wells Fargo. We can't forget about Jeopardy and Wheel of fortune too. He also faithfully watched the news each day, kept up with politics, and enjoyed documentaries.
However, his greatest passion was the love of family. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. Jimmy would do anything that he could do for his family and instilled those same values in his children and grandchildren.
He felt the same level of dedication to his fraternal brothers as well. Jimmy was a lifetime member of Sanford Masonic Lodge #101, Kalif Temple 144 Greensboro, NC Sanford Shrine Club, and G. Wesley Allen Consistory #42 of
Sanford, NC. Throughout the years he served in many leadership positions in these organizations. He forged lifelong friendships with his fraternity brothers, and they have supported him throughout his recent health challenges. The calls, visits, prayers, meals, words of encouragement, and gifts have been so deeply appreciated.
The Tysor family would also like to take the time to thank his care givers; Miss Rosalind, Val Covington, and Celeste Picou. We would like to also thank the care teams of Liberty Commons Rehabilitation Center with special recognition to Gloria Bettis as well as Liberty Hospice Care. Dr. Atieh and his team at First Health Cardiology did and exceptional job with our father. Finally, we would like to extend a special thank you to neighbor and friend, Ernest Murchison. The expressions of love and concern for our father have been far too numerous to mention. Please know that we deeply appreciate each and every one of you.
Jimmy was the youngest of 15 children. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Ann Williams Tysor and by his parents, Russell Lee and Mary Barnes Tysor; siblings, Mary Izetta Hart, Larzell Dowdy, Hellon Dunham, Juanita Watts, Venice Dowdy, Elmar Taylor, Ramona Tysor, Otto Tysor, Nathaniel Tysor, John Russell, and Luther Tysor.
Jimmy is survived by his children; Charlene and Cassandra Tysor; grandchildren; Whitney and Ross Tysor, siblings; Billie Joyce "Elwood" Davis, Ceola McIver, Virgilene McIver (niece raised like a sister), and Winfred Tysor (Hazel); one special nephew like a son, Ricky Tysor; along with a host of nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received from Tuesday, July 23 to Friday, July 26 from 4pm - 8pm daily at 1903 Tramway Road, Sanford NC
