Joan Catherine Mullery (Fitzsimmons), 94, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2024 at the Tidewell Hospice House in Sarasota, Florida.
The last of her generation, Joan was born May 17, 1930, in Avoca, PA, to the late Thomas Fitzsimmons and Helen Sheridan Fitzsimmons. Joan and her family moved to New Jersey in her early teens and lived there until 1959 moving to Miami, Florida, with her former husband, the late Joseph Mullery. Together they raised their six children in Cutler Ridge. In 2016, she moved to Sarasota, FL. Joan was an avid traveler, though she had a fear of flying; she made many friends throughout her travels. She had a curious soul and was always excited to be learning something new. Joan was a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Friends loved Joan for her quick Irish wit, knew she was only a phone call away, and would always be there for them. Joan loved her jobs in retail at the A&P tea company in NJ before raising her family, and later at Jordan Marsh and Burdines in Miami, FL.
In addition to her parents and former husband, Joan is preceded in death by her son Paul Mullery, her sisters Rosemary Shubick, Eleanor Dobbins, Anne Kunze, and her brothers John and Thomas Fitzsimmons, her granddaughter Elizabeth Ann Wyant, and great-grandson Joseph James Ackerman.
She is survived by her children Joseph (Regine) Mullery, Mary (Frank) Wyant, Vera Mullery, Susan (Glenn) Rice, Joanne (Cindy) Mullery, and Cathy (Jim) Moore, as well as her grandchildren Lisa, Patricia, Sean, Katie, Kelly, Eric, Jake, Evan, Cara, Brandon, and Samantha. Her great-grandchildren include Bradley, Blake, George, Ryder, Madison, and Parker. Joan is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Granny Nannies of Sarasota and the doctors, nurses, volunteers and staff of Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota for their wonderful care of our mom, and their kindness towards us. The family will be remembering Joan in private. Memorials in Joan's name can be made to Tidewell Foundation, 3550 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34239, 941-552-7546 support.tidewellfoundation.org. Your Traditions Funeral Home is serving the Mullery Family.
