Joan A. Oetjen, 90, of Poughkeepsie, passed away peacefully at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck on September 1, 2023.
Joan was born on January 21, 1933, to Dorothy and Raymond Joyce Sr.
She was a 1950 graduate and former Head Majorette at F.D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park.
Mrs. Oetjen worked for the former Western Printing in Poughkeepsie before moving on to a position at IBM. She retired from IBM in 1987.
Joan's family always meant everything to her. Following her retirement in 1987, she and her (best friend) mother, Dorothy, were always there to help with babysitting her grandchildren. She also enjoyed helping her daughter, Kris, at Kris's deli, the former K&J's Red Barn Delight in Hyde Park.
She was a longtime parishioner of St. James' Episcopal Church in Hyde Park.
Joan met the love of her life August (Bud) Oetjen Jr. in high school. They married on May 6, 1951, in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie and were just shy of their 72nd anniversary when Bud passed away in April of this year. Joan and Bud are reunited now, after only a few months apart.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Penny Oetjen-Simmons and husband, Phil; and son, Duane Oetjen, and wife, Becky.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Janeen, Jamie, Andrew, Ria, Karl, and Emily; and great-grandchildren, Tyler, Trista, Brianna, Braidan, Joseph, Alida, Lana, Evelyn, and August.
Survivors also include her sister-in-law, Barbara Joyce (whom she has always called the sister she never had), and many dear nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Joan was predeceased by her daughter, Kristine Oetjen, in 2009; and great-grandson, Trevor Sonnenberg, in 2019. Joan also had a special bond with her brother, Raymond Joyce Jr., who passed away in 2021.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and graveside services will be private.
The Oetjen family respectfully requests memorial donations to the Hyde Park Food Pantry, 28 Harvey Street, Hyde Park, NY, 12538. (www.hpfoodpantry.org/hydeparkfoodpantry-donate)
Arrangements are under the direction of Sweet's Funeral Home, Hyde Park.
