JoAnn Brito Crippen

JoAnn Brito Crippen, 74, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 26, surrounded by love and prayer.

Born in Hyannis, Massachusetts, to Cape Verdean parents Dorothy and Joseph Brito, JoAnn or "Jo Jo" lived a life as bold as it was beautiful. Her greatest joy came from spending time with family, extended cousins, her cherished granddaughter, and her close circle of friends, especially Sharon and Laverne, who preceded her in death.

JoAnn was a trailblazer. She broke barriers as the first woman and first woman of color to serve on the Barnstable Police Department , standing as a shining example for girls and women in her community. Tall, athletic, and striking, JoAnn carried herself with quiet confidence, choosing a life of service, creativity, and care.

A talented painter, florist, jewelry and glass artist and gardener. JoAnn's life was shaped by strength, creativity, and a deep love for animals. Her artistic spirit lives on in her son, Scott, and granddaughter, Marley, who both carry forward her passion for the arts and nature.

JoAnn found happiness in crafting handmade holiday gifts for her family and friends. Some of her happiest moments were spent on Yarmouth Road, gathered with loved ones, sharing food, laughter, and stories.

In her later years, JoAnn became an LPN at Cape Cod Health, once again dedicating her life to service and care.

As one of only two girls in a family mostly made up of boys, JoAnn learned early to speak her mind and back it up with conviction. From a young age, she was fiercely competitive and eager to demonstrate her bravery and abilities. Those who knew her best remember her wit and unmistakable presence.

JoAnn is survived by her son, Scott Dias; her granddaughter, Marley; and her siblings, James, Sandra, Joseph, and Peter. She was preceded in death by her brother Wayne.

A private ceremony will be held by the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial donations may be made in her name to the VNA of Cape Cod or Hospice of Cape Cod.
