Joann Dorothy Nixon, age 86, of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025. Born on January 17, 1939, in St. Louis, Missouri, Joann was the eldest of four children and the beloved daughter of a close-knit family. From an early age, she radiated compassion, warmth, and quiet strength-qualities that defined her life and left a lasting mark on everyone she met.
Joann married the love of her life, Ted Nixon, and together they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage. Their partnership was filled with love, laughter, and devotion as they built a happy home and a beautiful life together. Ted preceded her in death in 2018, but the bond they shared remained a source of comfort and pride to her always.
Together, Joann and Ted raised two children: Christy Nixon Moss and Keith Nixon, and a third child, John Edward Nixon, passed shortly after birth. Joann's life was a testament to resilience, determination and unconditional love for her family. As evidenced in her devotion to her son, Keith. She was his advocate throughout her life and after Ted's passing, they became a wonderful support for each other.
Her family was her greatest joy. She took immense pride in her grandchildren, Jenny Moss and Morgan Moss (Ashley), and found pure delight in her great-granddaughters, Millie Joy and Penny Lane Moss, whose laughter brought her endless happiness.
Joann loved life and lived it to the fullest. She enjoyed traveling, especially to the Grand Ole Opry and to casinos, where her joyful spirit always shined. Music was a constant in her life, often filling her home with the cheerful sounds of country classics. She also loved puzzles and games that kept her mind sharp and her creativity alive.
For many years, Joann proudly served as a bus driver for the DeKalb County School System, where she was known for her caring heart, reliability, and the genuine affection she showed to the students and families she served. Her kindness and dedication left a lasting impression on her community. Joann was surrounded by good friends and wonderful neighbors on Glaze Drive. In recent years, she was surrounded by family and her friend and caregiver, Ruth Johnson, enjoying excursions, laughter and good banter.
Joann Dorothy Nixon is survived by her children, Christy Nixon Moss (Chris Moss), Keith Nixon, grandchildren Jenny Moss and Morgan Moss (Ashley) and great grandchildren Millie Joy and Penny Lane.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Joann's life on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Crowell Brothers Peachtree Chapel, 5051 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Peachtree Corners, GA 30092. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 15, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again prior to the service on Thursday from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. A cryptside service will follow at Peachtree Memorial Park at 3:00 PM.
