Joey attended school at Washington Senior High School and immediately went on to serve his country in the United States Army as a rifle Marksmen. Joey enjoyed the outdoors and liked to hunt and go fishing. However, one of his most favorite past times was being an "American Picker" and collecting all kinds of things that were interesting to him. One of his collections include over four hundred fishing poles that he has picked up from all over.
Survivors include his children, Sally Phillips, Suzie Johnson, Jodi Phillips, Mike Phillips and Cody Walters; his siblings, Judy Sanderson, Janie Jones and Judson 'Pee-Wee" (Ethel) Phillips. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Joey was preceded in death by his son in 2000, John Phillips; his brothers, Jimmy, Jerry, Jon, Jay and Jessie Phillips; his sister, Jackie Tarbill and his sons in law, Sam Johnson and Bob Penwell.
