John T. Bauer, D.D.S., 91, of Iowa City died on Friday, August 26, 2022 at Windmill Manor in Coralville.
Memorial services will be at 10am on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at St. Mary s Catholic Church, Iowa City with Father Steve Witt officiating. Immediately following the service, the family invites guests to a luncheon at the church s parish hall. Burial will follow the luncheon at St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed toward St. Mary s Catholic Church, the Regina Foundation or the University of Iowa Center for Advancement c/o UI Children s Hospital Fund.
John was born on February 21, 1931, in Iowa City, IA, the son of Frederick and Sylvia (Kober) Bauer.
He graduated from St. Mary s High School, Iowa City. and went on to graduate from the University of Iowa as a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1956.
On September 17, 1955, John married Martha Mottet at St. Mary s Catholic Church, Iowa City.
From 1956 through 1959, John served in the US Public Health Service.
John was very active in the Iowa City community. He was a member of St. Mary s Catholic Church, past president of the first St. Mary s Parish Council, the first Regina Foundation, Johnson County Dental Society, State of Iowa Dental Society, and a lifetime member of the American Dental Society.
John had many talents and hobbies. He loved to garden, hunt, and fish, and being outdoors in general. He was especially talented and resourceful at refinishing furniture, with family and friends enjoying many of the beautiful pieces he restored. John and Marty also loved to travel over the years. John enjoyed spending time with his family more than anything. The family has many fond memories of family dinners, holidays and summers together in Minnesota.
Anyone who knew John, knew that he had a great sense of humor, loved to tell jokes and make people laugh.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Craig Champion for the exceptional care and friendship to John over the years.
John is survived by his wife Martha; children, James (Leigh Ann) Bauer of Minneapolis, MN, Ellen (Mike) Mattes of Tiffin, IA, and Mike Bauer of Des Moines, IA; grandchildren, Maxwell, Elena (Bill), Corey (Teressa), Casey (Zoey), Mary and Krista (Nick) and great-grandchildren, Elinor, Will and Dave. He is also survived by numerous extended family and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Sylvia Bauer and grandson Andrew.

Ellen and Family.
I am sorry to hear about Dr John.. I remember you talking alot about Dr John and Marty when we worked together at Alliant. They were usually funny and loving.
I send my heartfelt prayers to all of you that time and great memories will make the healing just a little easier

We all loved Dr. Bauer, he was so funny he made going to the dentist more like going to a comedy show. In addition he was a great friend to my parents. My condolences to the Bauer family, he will be missed.
