John, age 90, passed away on July 14, 2024. He was a Commander in the Navy for more than 10 years and was a Navy man through and through. He served in Taiwan, Japan, and sailed through the Mediterranean on the Jonas Ingram. John retired from the Navy in 1983. He received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Florida and was a proud member of Delta Tau Delta. John was very well-read and knowledgeable. He loved reading, music, running, working on cars, and working with his hands. John was a true family man who was a wonderful father, husband, and "Pop Pop". He will be forever missed.
He is survived by his son, John William Baxter Jr.; daughter in law, Michelle Baxter, and granddaughter, Kimberly Baxter.
John is preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Marylewis Peck Baxter; brothers, George Baxter and Carl Baxter; mother, Madeline V. Brown; and father, George Nason Baxter.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Shelby Chifici and Amedysis Home Health for their dedication and excellent care to John over these past few years.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation at T2T.org.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation at Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home at 7738 Florida Blvd. Denham Springs, LA 70726 on Saturday, July 20, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the Magnolia Room.
