John Thomas Bitter. Born in Sandusky, OH November 13, 1928. Died October 27, 2023. He lived the majority of his life in Lakewood, OH.
He is survived by his sister, Suzanne Berwind (Howard); his sons, Donald (Kelley), and Douglas (Katherine); his eight grandchildren: Ann (Donna), Ashly (Michael Codispoti), Donald (Olivia), Amanda (Eric Wood), Shelby, Andrew (Madison), Sara, and Kaitlyn; and his six great-grandchildren: Alex Hickle, Carter Greene, Zoey Bitter, Chloey Bitter, Oliver Wood, and Thomas Bitter. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 72 years, Mary Etta, his eldest son, David (Veronica, both deceased), as well as his parents, Clyde and Thelma (nee Amato) Bitter.
He met his wife, Mary Etta, in Spanish class at Lakewood High School in 1943. He was drafted into the Army in 1950, and was married prior to being deployed to Korea, where he served his two years keeping medical records for the Division Surgeon.
After he returned home from Korea, he worked at Perfection Stove Co. in the "new" field of computers. The company closed its Cleveland plant in 1958, and he moved on to work at Carling Brewing Co. When Carling moved its headquarters to Boston in 1969, he moved on to Sherwin Williams, retiring after 25 years of service.
Like his wife, Mary Etta, he was an avid classic and early jazz music follower, having attended many jazz festivals across the country.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 18001 Detroit Ave. Lakewood at 9:30 a.m. Friday, November 3, 2023. The family will meet with friends immediately after the service. Private interment at Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, OH. Remembrances may be sent to St. Peter's Church, or to the Class of 1946, Lakewood High School Alumni Foundation. www.ZMFH.com
