When the time comes to bid this life farewell, we should find comfort in knowing that a loving God will be there with us to guide us to our new home.
On Tuesday, July 1, 2025, John Reuben Buggs, Sr. peacefully departed this life in Charlottesville, Virginia, at the remarkable age of 100. John was born on February 18, 1925, to the late Hattie Winston-Buggs and Fred Buggs. At an early age, he joined Columbia Baptist Church, where his faith would remain an important part of his life. John worked as a custodian and truly loved his job. In his free time, he enjoyed watching baseball and wrestling, and he was a devoted fan of the Washington Commanders - proudly supporting the team through every name change and season.
Above all, John loved his family. He shared a particularly close bond with his cousin, Robert Johnson, whom he fondly spoke of often. John was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, and his beloved wife of 65 years, Emily Rebecca Buggs.
He leaves to cherish his memory: His devoted children, Becky Buggs of Columbia, VA, and Johnnie Reuben Buggs, Jr. (Gertrude) of New Canton, VA; Three granddaughters, whom he adored: Cassandra Scruggs of Buckingham, VA, and Clarissa Buggs and Theresa Buggs, both of Charlottesville, VA; Five great-grandchildren, his "heartbeats": Cameron Scruggs, Cody Scruggs, Caleb Scruggs, Isaiah Tolliver, and Jordan Quarles; One sister, Rozetta Artist of Richmond, VA; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. John's warmth and steady presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love and family will live on in all who knew him.
In our Hearts
We thought of you today, but that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday. And day before that too. We think of you in silence. We often speak your name. Now all we have is memories. And your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake, with which we will never part. God has you in His keeping. We have you in our hearts. - Author Unknown
