John J. "Jack" Check, age 86 of Prairie du Chien passed away Friday, January 5, 2024, at Mayo Clinic Health Hospital (Saint Mary's) Rochester, MN. He was born on October 10, 1937, the son of John and Amelia (Berntgen) Check. Growing up in Prairie du Chien, Jack attended both St. Gabriel's Catholic School and Prairie du Chien High School. He worked for National Decorated Metals until its closure and later worked with Prairie du Chien's local police and fire dispatch. Jack worked for the 3M Company in Prairie du Chien for nearly 30 years until retirement. Postretirement, he took a job with Rockweiler Appliance & TV in Prairie du Chien where he worked for an additional 20 years. He enjoyed playing cards (especially euchre), riding his bicycle, spending time with family, and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Patricia; their children Randy (Michele) Check of Prairie du Chien, Emily (Joe) McBee of Fennimore, and Kevin (Tricia) Check of Waunakee; brother William "Bill" (Wanda) Check; grandchildren Clair (Christopher) Jelinek, Rachel (Brandon) Schmitz, Derek (Ashley) McBee, Rebecca (Donnie) Dean, and Maggie and Jack Check; 7 great-grandchildren with twins on the way and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Thelma (Ed) Zimmer, Helen (Wallace "Wally") Evert, Esther (Harold "Brownie") Hamann, Dorothy (Eldon) Zimmerman, Robert "Bob" (Janice) Check, and Mildred (Leo) Zimmerman.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Gabriel's Church of the Holy Family Parish, Msgr. Charles Stoetzel officiating with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call at the Garrity Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., with an Eagle's Club Tribute at 6:45 P.M. Friends may also call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of departure for church.
