John A. Conley, Sr., 81, of Mason City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center.
Born on January 31, 1943, in Providence, Rhode Island, John was the youngest child of Peter Conley and Elizabeth Puglia née Wright. As the baby of the family, he was known for his adventurous spirit, oftentimes spending the entire day outdoors returning home only at sunset. On John's 18th birthday he enlisted in the United States Air Force, beginning a distinguished 23-year career that would span multiple states and lead him to serve with honor during the Vietnam War. His dedication to his country was evident, and he was proud to have served in Michigan, Texas, Florida, and ultimately retired from the Air Force in Anchorage, Alaska, on October 1, 1984.
Following his military retirement, John's life took a new and joyful turn when he married Diane Robinson on August 29, 1992, in Wasilla. John often said that his life began again when he met Diane, and together they created a life full of love, travel, and adventure. They shared many wonderful years together, especially enjoying the company of their children and grandchildren. John's love for family extended to his three children and Diane's two, as they became one blended family.
Together they shared a love of travel, especially cruising. Many of their happiest memories were made visiting their grandchildren and exploring new destinations. Including their final trip to Alaska together last year. They spent countless hours traveling in their motorhome, taking in the sights and sounds of the U.S. and visiting numerous NASCAR tracks.
John was a lifetime member of the Wasilla, Alaska VFW Post 9365, where he proudly supported fellow veterans. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge in Lake Havasu, Arizona, where he and Diane enjoyed countless hours together, sharing meals, entertainment, and laughter with friends. Additionally, John was a former member of the Eagles, and his loyalty to his community was always apparent.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Diane; their children, Michael (Amanda) Conley, Jacksonville, FL, John Conley, Jr., Otis, OR, Guy (Missy) Conley, Anchorage, AK, and David (Sherry) Robinson, Wasilla, AK; 12 grandchildren and their great grandchildren; he is also survived by his step brother, Frank (Lynda) Puglia; and Diane's sisters, Colleen (Michael) and Connie.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Peter Conley and Elizabeth and Gaetano Puglia; his stepson, Cory Robinson; and his siblings, George, Ronald, Mary, Earl, and Cora.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, March 7, 2025 at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs. Burial will follow in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.
John's family will greet friends one hour prior to his service at the funeral home.
