Mr. Cowart was born on March 21, 1938 in Atlanta, Georgia to loving parents, the late Mr. Orben Jewel Cowart and Mrs. Katherine Brown Cowart. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska and a master's degree from the University of Maryland. In addition, Mr. Cowart proudly served our country as a Lieutenant Commander and retired from the United States Navy. Following his time in the service, he was a police officer and later retired from the Gwinnett County Police Department.
Mr. Cowart is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mrs. Judy Cowart; three children, Mr. John Michael Cowart, Jr. and his wife, Joann of Evans, GA, Ms. Kathleen Hackle of Carrollton, GA, and Mrs. Sarah Key and her husband, Donald of Douglasville, GA; six grandchildren, Donald Stephen Key and his wife, Kelly of Villa Rica, Alexander Mitchell Key of Douglasville, Abigail Nicole Mitas and her husband, Avery of Douglasville, Michael Errett Hackle of Nashville, TN, Emily Morgan Cowart of Gainesville, FL, and Samuel Burton Cowart of Tallahassee, Fl; 2 great grandchildren, Natalie Morgan Key and Killian Thomas Key both of Villa Rica. In addition, many other relatives and friends also survive.
The service for John Michael Cowart will be held in the Chapel of Benson Funeral Home on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at 2 PM with Dr. Larry Rogers officiating. An interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
