Mr. John David Cox, Sr., age 79, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2025 at his home.
Mr. Cox was born September 9, 1945, in Polk County, Georgia. He was the son of the late Clifford Paul Cox, late Nettie Bell Lorrens Cox Norton and Grover H. Norton (Stepfather).
Mr. Cox was a devoted husband for over 61 years to his late beloved wife, Ruby, a loving father and "Granddaddy", brother and friend. He loved the Lord and loved spending time with his family and dogs. He loved going to Hardee's with his wife Ruby to spend time with their friends. He loved music and loved to dance. He enjoyed relaxing while watching music shows and soaps with the love of his life, Ruby. In his younger years, he loved a good round of golf and helping coach softball. He retired from the Watauga County School System where he worked as a mechanic at the school bus garage. J.D.'s presence in the lives of all who knew and loved him, will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents Mr. Cox is preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Ruby Cook Cox; his sisters: Evelyn Cox Brown and Geraldine Cox May; brothers: Leon Cox and William "Bill" Cox.
Mr. Cox is survived by his children, John "David" Cox, Jr. (Kelly), Charisse Cox Cuthbertson (Larry); grandson: Benjamin Cox; granddaughters: Michelle Cuthbertson South (Damon) and Devena McNeil; great-grandchildren: Sawyer and Wyatt Cox, Timber and Thistlee South; brother-in-law, Rick Cook; beloved dog and best friend "Molly" and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
Funeral services to celebrate J.D.'s life will be held Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 3:00 PM, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church where he was a member, with Pastor Tony Clark and Pastor Gene Ammons officiating. Interment will follow in the John Johnson Cemetery.
Mr. Cox's family will receive friends Thursday, July 3, 2025, from 1:00 PM until 2:45 PM, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church - 2011 Spanish Oak Road Newland, NC. The following family and friends will serve as pallbearers: David Cox, Benjamin Cox, Michelle South, Damon South, John Kendrick and Dan South. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in memory of J.D. & Ruby be made to Blue Ridge Partnership for Children. Contributions can be mailed to PO Box 1387 Burnsville, NC 28714 or given to Charisse at the visitation.
