John Edward Creekmore Jr.

John Edward Creekmore, 92, passed away August 10, 2025. John was born in Norfolk, Virginia to the late Mary Alice and John Edward Creekmore, Sr.

John grew up in the Berkley section of Norfolk and attended Robert Gatewood Elem, Ruffner Junior High then on to Maury High School and graduated in 1951. John was an outstanding football player at Maury playing offensive and defensive line. Upon Completing school John had opportunities to play football at William and Mary and University of Virginia. John elected to enlist in the US Army. John reported to boot camp in Fort Leonard Wood Missouri in 1951. John eventually had orders to Pusan, South Korea towards the end of the war. Upon returning from Korea John eventually reported to Fort Lee in Virginia and was assigned to Army Special Service playing football for Fort Lee. After John's military service he came back to Berkley and married Myra Fleischer in 1956. Myra was also a Berkley resident and Maury High School graduate. John then served on the Police Department for the City of Norfolk for 1 year. He then transferred to the Norfolk Fire Department. John served on the Norfolk Fire Department for thirty nine and a half years.

John's priorities in life were taking care of his family. John included his two sons, nieces and nephews in all aspects of his life. From camping and fishing trips to coaching baseball, football and basketball. He spent hours on the athletic fields helping and instructing. John built two baseball batting cages in the back yard where his two sons spent countless of hours hitting baseballs. He shared those batting cages with local players and teams.

When John was not on duty at the Fire Department he was busy with many different side jobs and small businesses. John and Myra opened a thrift bread store in the hilltop area contracting with salvage companies and attending many auctions. John also had a small paint business and home repair business.

After retiring from the Fire Department John went to work part time with the Virginia State Police as a road side assistant. John stayed with the State for 13 years. John and Myra moved from the Kempsville area and enjoyed life in the Blackwater area of Virginia Beach living on a small 2.5 acre farm. They enjoyed and experienced owning 2 horses and the fruit trees on their property. In John's words, "he had a wonderful life". He had a personal relationship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was sure to share his faith with his family and friends. His faith was the cornerstone of his life.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 68 years, Myra A. Creekmore; sons, Niles Creekmore and his wife Holly and Mark Creekmore and his wife Marlene; grandchildren, Lauren Peabody, Missy Creekmore and Madeline Creekmore. John was predeceased by his two sisters; Alice Olson and Betty Webster.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 2pm at Blackwater Baptist Church, 6000 Blackwater Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23457.
