Our beloved patriarch, John Denis Cushing, known to all as Denis, passed on from this world early in the morning of June 5, 2025, at the age of 93. He was a wonderful man, an incredible and kind father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather. Born January 25, 1932, to Charles and Anna Cushing, Denis was an only child, loved dearly by his parents. He grew up throughout Southern California and along the Pacific coast, an All-American Boy, playing on the beach and being in the sun. At 14, the trajectory of his life was irrevocably changed by a bout with Polio. His recovery would shape who he was and what he would be able to do. A true Patriot, Denis enlisted in the Navy in 1950, fully prepared to serve his country in the Korean War. Instead, he was honorably discharged due to the long-term side effects of the Polio infection. He stayed in Southern California, subsequently meeting, falling in love with, marrying, and creating a life with Jean Pelle. A love story for the ages, they stuck together through thick and thin, and his dedication to Jean remains an inspiration to their surviving children, Michael Cushing (wife Tina), Laurie Huarte (husband Greg), Susan Nielsen (heavenly husband Kolin), Wendy Billmeier (husband Robert), John Cushing (wife Julie), and William Cushing (wife Sandy), 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. Denis worked as an insurance salesman, doing what he did best – talking to people, making them feel comfortable. A true salesman, Denis was at his best when he was able to talk to people, learn about who they were, and lift others up throughout his day. He was a friend to everyone he met. After Jean was called to heaven in 2001, Denis filled his days by being with his family and friends and playing cards, mainly Italian Gin, and telling stories to all who would listen. He enjoyed going to lunch with his friends and family, Polly's Pies for some warm cherry pie, or Kimmie's for breakfast. He loved visits from his kids and grandkids, and we all could spend hours at his house, playing cards, swimming in the pool, eating food, and just being together. He was our best friend and a wonderful mentor. He taught us all what it means to be family. We will miss him desperately, but we take comfort in knowing that he is home in heaven with his Pinkie, his parents, and his friends, together again, basking in the light of God's grace.
