John “Wayne” Ely, 69, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully at home on November 2, 2025. Wayne was born May 3, 1956, in Charleston, SC, to MSgt William and Anna Ducic Ely. After the death of her husband in 1959, Anna returned with her children to Morgantown, where she lived until her passing in 2017.
Wayne was a graduate of St. Francis High School class of 1974. He was employed by Dippel & Dippel Coal, Patriot Mining, and after 21 years, retired from Glenmark Holding, LLC.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Bill and Barry. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lynne, sons Andrew (Lacey) of Morgantown and Lee of Holly Springs, NC; sisters Karen (Roy) Carter of Arizona, Teresa Bowen of Indiana, brother Karl (Debbie) of Kansas; grandchildren Vivien and Levi Ely of Morgantown and Isabelle, Ashtyn and Emmie Ely of Holly Springs; sisters-in-law Joyce Ely, Frances Brownfield, and Alice Cunningham; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass took place on November 7th at St. Francis de Sales Parish with Monsignor Anthony Cincinnati as celebrant.
The family would like to express its deep gratitude to the staff and nurses of Amedisys for their kindness and gentle care.
