John Ervon Fick, 74, of Port Clinton, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at his residence. He was born on May 21, 1951, in Port Clinton, Ohio, to Ervon W. and Virginia E. (Jess) Fick.

John was a graduate of Port Clinton High School, Class of 1969. On December 7, 1974, he married Susan Jean Guendelsberger, who preceded him in death on December 14, 2015.

John began working at Lake Erie Sporting Goods while still in high school. Sometime after his graduation he shifted employment to USCO Company as a forklift operator before spending many years in maintenance at Le Marin Condominiums in Port Clinton. In his retirement he worked as a groundskeeper at Schedel Arboretum and Gardens in Elmore, Ohio. Known for his wide range of skills, John truly embodied the role of a "jack of all trades."

In his younger years, John enjoyed playing softball with friends and family with The Port Clinton Softball League, playing for Mon Ami, and winning many tournaments. He spent numerous hours playing volleyball with the Port Clinton Men's Volleyball Leage, scoring many points under the nickname "Catnip". While being active in those sports, he was also coaching the Jefferson Elementary Braves Football team. Throughout his time coaching, he impacted many young athletes' lives.

He had a passion for American muscle cars as well as motorcycles. Regarding the latter, he took pleasure in both riding and collecting them. In his 40's, John dedicated much of his time to the practice of martial arts, studying both Wing Chun Do Kung Fu and Wing Chun Do Ju Jitsu, earning his black belt in both. In that time John also became a teacher of the practice ushering many students to success.

John had a deep love for the wild beauty and natural habitats of our region. He spent many a day in the duck blind with his Father, Grandfather and family on Magee Marsh. Later in his years his focus shifted to conservation and preservation. He had once expressed the dream of becoming a veterinarian, and so it follows throughout his life he loved and cared for all the animals that came into his care, especially his much-beloved dogs and cats.

Music was another of John's lifelong interests, spending many years attempting to master the guitar. His Smoke on the Water was simply the best. He was a beloved regular at Bell Mell Tavern & Pizza as well as The Gristmill, where he was considered family by all, and where he formed many lasting friendships. John never met a stranger he didn't like and had a gift for gab and a profound ear for listening, always making others feel seen and welcome. John was a forever son of Port Clinton, OH. His absence in the fabric of her community will be felt for many, many years to come.

John is survived by his son, Matthew John (Jennifer Price Fick) Fick, sisters, Connie Frias and Judy Ceccoli, sisters-in-law, Diana (David) French and Judith Klotz, and nephews James Frias and Aaron Frias along with their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant son, David Fick, and niece, Angelina Frias as well as nephews, Jeffrey Ceccoli and Billy Ceccoli.

Private family services for John will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Ottawa County Humane Society, Friends of Magee Marsh, and Schedel Arboretum and Gardens.
