On June 8th, 1949 he married Betty Lynn Moad in Guthrie. Together they raised five children, three sons and two daughters.
John will be remembered as a gifted storyteller, a farmer, man of resourcefulness, and a devoted family man whose greatest joy was being surrounded by his loved ones and the land he cherished. His legacy of hard work, creativity, and love will live on in all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; his sons, Gary Lynn Goodwin, Sr. and Samuel Ray Goodwin, Sr.; and his parents, brother, and one great-grandson.
John is survived by his eldest son, John Thomas Goodwin II and wife, Donna of Guthrie; two daughters, Judith Grace Nelson and husband, Clifford of Guthrie and Barbara Joyce Dew of Guthrie; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and eight great-great- grandchildren, including his granddaughter, Suzzanne Davis, and her husband, Brian of Guthrie, with whom he spent the last four years of his life.
Funeral services will take place at 2:00 P.M., Monday, August 25, 2025 at Guthrie Christian Church located at 4318 South Division Street in Guthrie. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, 220 North 1st Street, Guthrie, Oklahoma 73044.
Viewing will be held on Sunday, August 24, 2025 from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. at Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.
