John Bradley Hanner, age 70, of Dover, and a longtime resident of Gnadenhutten, died peacefully June 21, 2023, following a decline from frontal lobe temporal dementia.
Born May 15, 1953, he was a son of the late Walter R. Hanner, Jr. and the late Mary Martha (Mumma) Hanner Carruthers.
Raised as a member of Dover’s St. John’s E&R Church, John participated in various youth activities, and was a 1972 graduate of Dover High School.
John attended the University of Akron, studying civil engineering and worked for nearly 40 years in various local civil engineering firms as an onsite project manager. He enjoyed driving his family across recently completed road and bridge projects and narrating the details of his work.
On December 27, 1985, John married the former Pearl L. Edwards, who survives. Together they lived in Gnadenhutten, where John served several terms on village council, and carefully tended to his yard.
In his spare time, John enjoyed casting a line into a nearby lake, stream, or river, and spending time with his beloved wife and family. John enjoyed his Sunday mornings, attending Dover Faith United Methodist Church and watching anything about the Pittsburgh Steelers. At a moment's notice, John's servant heart was shown by his actions of helping others and doing everything to the best of his ability.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 37 years, include, their son, Paul (Lindsay) Hanner and their children, Emerson and Jackson; his daughter, Stephanie P. Hanner of Delaware; and his son, Brian J. Hanner of Dover and his children, Jacob and Caroline; his sister, Jennifer (Mark) Fenderbosch and family of Avon Lake, and brother, David Hanner and family of Maryland; his sisters-in-law, Violet (Francis) Krantz and family of Lancaster and Joyce (the late Bruce) Hibinger and family of Port Washington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held in the Geib Funeral Center, 5600 N. Wooster Ave., Dover, on Saturday July 1, from 10 to 11 a.m. Pastor Matt Rowe will lead a service celebrating John’s life beginning at 11 a.m. Inurnment will follow in Ridgecrest Memory Garden at Dover.
The Hanner family would like to thank Greenridge Meadows of Millersburg for their excellent care. Their staff provided love, compassion, and stability for John and the entire family the past several weeks.
