John Walter Hewitt, Sr. of Dale City, VA, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 20, 2022, surrounded by the love of his family. He was 89.
John was born in Piney Point, St. Mary's County, Maryland, to Alphonso "Buck" and Hiltrude (Combs) Hewitt. He was the oldest of six siblings and the patriarch of a close-knit family.
He graduated from Great Mills High School before joining the Air Force and serving as Airman First Class during the Korean War. He often said that spending a lonely and cold holiday in Korea gave him an enduring appreciation for family Christmas celebrations at home.
After returning stateside, he married June Carol Sawyer, a nurse from Newport News, VA. They settled in the Washington, DC area where John began a long civil service career. John eventually retired from what is now the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services where he served as Vice President of the Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) Federal Credit Union, now known as Democracy Federal Credit Union.
John loved being on the water and was intensely proud of being a Southern Marylander. He and his brother Joe would often take family members and friends crabbing and fishing on his boat. He was an avid Washington sports fan, and some of his fondest memories were entertaining family and friends for the Super Bowl. John was known to be wise and humble, rarely speaking ill of others. Younger family members referred to him as Uncle John or Big Daddy. By example, he taught them to be kind, compassionate, family-focused and faithful. He and June were long time members of Holy Family Catholic Church in Dale City where they regularly attended Mass.
John was preceded in death by his parents and June, his wife of 47 years. He is survived by two sons, John Walter "Walt" Hewitt, Jr., of Manassas, and James Ronald Hewitt of Fredericksburg, along with grandchildren: Chris Knutti, and Austin, Josh, Emily, Zach, and Logan Hewitt. John was particularly proud to be promoted to great-grandpa with the birth of Chloe, daughter of his oldest grandson, Chris, and his wife Becca, of Spotsylvania. He is also survived by his five remaining siblings: Joseph Alphonso Hewitt, Mary Hiltrude Densmore, Delores Ann Grubber, Pearl Cecilia Roundtree, Margaret Julia Keith, and numerous nieces and nephews with whom he had close and loving relationships.
The Hewitt family will receive visitors on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, from 5 pm to 8 pm at Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, VA. John will be interred with his wife at Quantico National Cemetery. The family requests that donations in his memory be sent to the Lustgarten Foundation to support research on pancreatic cancer, which took the life of his beloved wife, June: https://events.lustgarten.org/give/192132/#!/donation/checkout.
