John M. Horan Jr.

John M. Horan, Jr, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother and a longtime Circleville resident, died following a short illness on March 31, 2025 at Garnet Health Medical Center. He was 83.
The son of the late John M. Horan Sr and Lila Weed Horan, he was born on May 17, 1941 in Middletown, NY. John enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard after High School and served his Country from 1960-1966. He was a graduate of Middletown high school and Orange County community college. He was the first male graduate from Mount Saint Mary's College. and completed his education degree at SUNY New Paltz.
After his service, he married Priscilla (Penny) Thompson on August 9,1969 in Middletown. John worked as a History teacher and enjoyed his students and always encouraged learning. In 1969, he became a member of the Circleville Fire Department, and found his calling as a first responder for his community. Over his lifetime, John was both a Chief and Past Chief for Circleville, a member of the New York State Park Police at Palisades, Senior safety administrator at Orange and Rockland Utilities, Orange County Fire Coordinator, Chief, Past Chief, fire instructor and Commissioner.
He is survived by his family, who were the most important people in his life; his wife Penny, son J. Matthew and his significant other Jennifer Voght-Bynes of Circleville and daughter Amy Doty and her husband Frank, all of Circleville; his brother James E Horan of Washington, sister Helen Francis Katolas and grandchildren Emily, Megan, Tyler James, and great-grandchildren Landon and Sutton.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 4, 2025 at 11 am at St. Paul's R. C. Church, Bullville, NY. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions in John's name may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Way, Memphis, TN 38105
