John Jackson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Caliman Funeral Services - Columbus from Dec. 17 to Dec. 18, 2025.
John William Jackson Sr., affectionately called "Sleepy" by family and friends, was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, on the 21st day of March in 1936. John W. Jackson was the third of six children, born to Helen & Scott Jackson. The Jackson clan migrated to Columbus, Ohio, first landing in Poindexter village, and then to the Hilltop where he connected with the community and graduated from West High School in 1954.
John W. Jackson Sr., after graduation worked briefly in the retail industry, and went on to serve his country in the United States Army from 1958 – 1960. He celebrated 35 years with the United States Postal Service. As a mail carrier, his blooming personality drew many people into his inner circle of associates, buddies, and life-long friends. John Jackson was a man of vast experience and provision. What he learned in life he passed on to others and thus providing them with tools that would last for a lifetime. What he meant he said, and what he said he meant, and it all resonated from within his heart.
John W. Jackson Sr. loved his family, and was the father of four paternal children Larry, John Jr., Jacqueline, Jennifer, and he shared a most precious relationship with his stepson, Robert. As time passed his grandchildren became the light of his life, sharing his & Barbara's home as much as their own. John Jackson, this man of provision became the main caregiver for his wife Barbara until her death. With even greater precision the great grandchildren captivated his very soul, he cooked for them, he took care of them, and he transported them to school, activities, vacation bible school, and wherever the need arose. John Jackson, a man of provision provided heartfelt love and care to his family. Also, he never neglected to have a thriving connection with his siblings and other family members.
John W. Jackson Sr., an activist in his community working with the Hilltop UMC food pantry and a founding father of the Hilltop Reunion Committee. He dearly loved the Second Community Church and served as a vital ally in the affairs of the church. He provided church leadership in a multitude of ways, for many years taking care of the edifice, as its custodian, standing tall as a doorkeeper on the senior usher board, member of the Samaritans, lifting songs to the Lord in the male chorus, serving as a Trustee, providing leadership as the secretary of the Trustees and finally as Chairman of Trustees.
John W. Jackson Sr., on Thursday night, December 12, 2025, laid down to rest his body and woke up in the paradise of the Kingdom of God.
John is preceded in death by his parents; Brothers Gordon Jackson Sr., Victor Jackson; Sister Judith Burton; daughter Jennifer Jackson; and wife Billie Jean Jackson. Left to cherish his memory children; Larry Rose, John (Glynis) Jackson Jr. Jacqueline Jackson, Robert (Jackie) Beard; sisters Kaye (Cheryl) Singer, Sally (Ralph) Taylor; eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
