John Robert Lorts

John Robert Lorts was born on October 1, 1946, and passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, at the age of 79. Originally of Belle, Missouri, John had called Virginia Beach, VA, his home for the past 48 years.

John dedicated his life to serving his country and his family with unwavering commitment and integrity. John enjoyed a long and successful civil service career at Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he retired in 2008 as Director of NAVSEA'S Shipyard Instructional Design Center, a full-service audiovisual department that created training products for all the U.S. Naval Shipyards. In addition, John bravely served his country during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968, embodying the spirit of sacrifice and courage, later suffering the effects of Agent Orange as a result.

More than his professional achievements, John excelled in his roles within his family. He rejoiced in the birth of both of his children, Peter and Amanda, and later when he became the grandfather of Judah and Jack. John was known for being an amazing husband, father, uncle, and friend-roles in which he left an indelible mark upon those who loved him.

John is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Marvin and Doris Lorts, his cherished son, Peter, and his brothers and sisters, Leslie, Lorene, Odell, Larry, and Judy. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Janet, his loving daughter, Amanda, precious grandsons, Judah and Jack, and nieces and nephews along with other family members and dear friends. When news of his passing reached family and friends, the words most often used to express their grief were 'heartbroken', 'kind', 'gentle'.. such a good man.

John's memorial service will be held at Kings Grant Baptist Church, 873 Little Neck Rd., Virginia Beach, on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 11:00 am where he attended for many years with Janet. She wishes to thank the many, many dear friends of this congregation for their support over a period of almost 50 years.
