John "David" Loy, 84, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. He was born August 19, 1940 in Ottumwa, Iowa to David E. and Lucille M. Loy. After moving around many towns in Iowa, his family settled in Salina, Kansas where he graduated from Salina High School in 1958. Before graduation, he joined the Army Reserves, serving until the Navy bug bit him. He then traded the Army life for life on his beloved ocean where he proudly served in the print shop aboard the USS Jason (AR8) Vulcan class repair shop. Upon receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to Salina to be with family.
In 1965, David was working as a printer and stopped in at the drug store across the street for a soda. There he met the absolute love of his life. He married Betty Podlena on March 17, 1966 in Topeka, Kansas.
After a brief time in Topeka, they settled in the Oklahoma City area. David worked as a printer for several years. While he was working as a Linotype operator at Norick Brothers Printing, he moved to the offices as an estimator and eventually became a salesman in the Automotive Business Forms Division. Later, Norick Brothers sold to Reynolds and Reynolds, where he stayed until he retired in 2003. His active nature and work ethic wasn't ready for retirement, though. He got a part-time cashier position at Walmart for "just a bit." He loved seeing his co-workers and regular customers. He retired from there in 2020 after 15 years.
David was preceded in death by his parents, David Loy and Lucille Loy; and son, John David Loy II.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty Loy of Yukon, OK; brother, Richard Loy and his wife, Ann of Elbert, CO; brother, Mike Loy and wife, Debbie of Salina, KS; daughter, Deanne Tate and her husband, Gary of Mustang, OK; and the apple of his eye, granddaughter, Gabby Tate, also of Mustang, OK; along with several cousins, nieces and nephews.
David's passion was his family. He would do anything for them, whether it was building tables for Christmas houses, taking anyone to the races, fishing or golfing, driving across town in the middle of the night to unlock his daughter's keys from her car, or doing anything to make us all laugh. He teased us all with love and made us all know we were loved.
Services will be Tuesday, June 17, 1:00pm, at Resurrection Mausoleum Chapel, 7801 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City.
