Melvin Eugene "Dusty" Moses Jr., 64, of Yukon, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025, with family members by his side.
Dusty was born on April 19, 1961, in Amarillo, Texas, to Melvin E. "Gene" Moses Sr. and Carolyn J. Moses. He graduated from Putnam City West High School and later attended technical classes for small engine repair.
Dusty first put his engine repair skills to use working at the Oklahoma City Zoo, where he was part of the maintenance and landscaping department. He later discovered a talent for cooking and spent several years learning to prepare Chinese cuisine at his family's favorite restaurant. A lifelong movie buff, Dusty went on to manage video rental stores for both Hollywood Video and Blockbuster. When those chapters came to a close, he transitioned into sales with Conn's HomePlus in the Oklahoma City area, where he worked for 13 years before retiring.
Dusty was first married to Betty, and they had one son together. Though life took them in different directions, Dusty was proud of his son, who later married and made him the proud grandfather of a beautiful granddaughter.
Later in life, Dusty found love again and married Kathy, opening his heart to his wife's children and treating them as his own. They stayed in contact throughout his life.
Dusty loved playing baseball growing up and later shared that passion by helping coach his little sister's softball team and serving as a baseball umpire. He never met a stranger and could make friends with anyone he met. Outgoing, funny, and always easy to talk to, Dusty had a gift for making people feel welcome. Many remember how much they enjoyed simply sitting and visiting with him. He had a great sense of humor and was known for his spot-on celebrity impressions – John Wayne being his favorite.
A devoted "Trekkie," Dusty loved Star Trek in all its forms, from the original series to the latest films, and could name every character, ship, and storyline by heart. One of the highlights of his life came just three months before his passing, when he had the opportunity to meet his favorite Star Trek character (Captain Kirk) played by William Shatner, at an event in Oklahoma City. Dusty was overjoyed, his trademark smile shining brighter than ever as he shared an enjoyable conversation and photos with Mr. Shatner. After learning of Dusty's health issue and before parting, Shatner (age 94) made Dusty promise he would return to the same event the following year so he and Shatner could meet again – a moment Dusty treasured deeply.
He is survived by his son, Christopher (Moses) Carter, age 42, and his granddaughter, Madison Riley, age 9, both of North Carolina; sisters, Edwina Floyd of Bethany, Angi Davis of Kingfisher, and Dee Patty of Yukon; six nieces and nephews; and five great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
