John L. "Jake" Machmer, 83, (widower of Ruth Machmer) of Canton, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 12, 2025, at the Skilled Nursing Unit in Towanda with family by his side.
John Lamar was born on October 22, 1941, in Canton, he was one of four children of the late Robert F. and Ethel (Blaney) Machmer.
He grew up in the mountainous area of Ward Township (Tioga County, PA) and as a young man graduated from Canton High School with the Class of 1959. Shortly following graduation Jake entered the U.S. Army and proudly served during the Cold War era until his honorable discharge in 1962. On April 6, 1963, he married the love of his life, the former Ruth Sechrist in Grover, PA. Together they raised two children and shared 57 beloved years of marriage. Jake was employed for several years by North Penn Health Center in Blossburg, PA until his retirement as well as part-time for Tioga County's Ward Township.
He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. Jake truly enjoyed any times spent at his cabin in Canada, especially with family and friends.
He leaves behind his children, LaVonna (Jeff) Smith and Todd Machmer both of Canton, grandchildren, Deanna (Matt)Doud of Millville, Heather (Justin) Walker of Roaring Branch, Alex Smith of Canton, Stephanie Waugh (Chad Allen) of Williamsport, great grandchildren, Ethan, Carsen, Jaxon, Cady, Carley, Emilee, Maycee, Madison, Noah, Kam and Gavin, a sister, Debbie Machmer of Canton, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
John was predeceased by his dear wife, Ruth, two brothers, Ronald, Robert Bradley Machmer.
In keeping with Jake's wishes all services will be private. Burial will be in the Ogdensburg Cemetery at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations In John L. Machmer's loving name may be directed to the Ward United Methodist Church, c/o 588 N. Center St.,
