John M. McCarthy, 79, of Parkersburg, passed away Monday, November 3, 2025, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He was born in Parkersburg, a son of the late John “Jack” and Lucille Myer McCarthy. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his siblings, sister, Lucinda “Cindy” McCarthy Spainhour, and brothers, Michael “Shanks” McCarthy and Thomas “Tom” McCarthy; he was also preceded in death by an infant grandson, Garrett Scott McIlwee, and a nephew, William “Bill” Hull.
John was a faithful Catholic, a lifetime member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, and he attended Parkersburg Catholic schools where he made many lifelong friends, “Go Blue!” Following graduation, John served his country with the United States Air Force. After his honorable discharge, he attended Marshall University, “Go Herd!” He never met a stranger and made friends everywhere he went.
He enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, watching college football and basketball, and following his grandchildren’s sports.
John loved his family dearly and was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.
His memory will be cherished by his loved ones, including his wife of 56 years, Marlene Witham McCarthy; daughter Jennifer Francisco and her family, husband, Scott, and children, John Patrick (Autumn), Anna (Brandon), and Andrew; daughter, Theresa McIlwee and her family, husband, Scott, and children, Alan and Sara; and daughter, Kathleen McCarthy and her children, Dylan (Shianne), Abby, and Michala; nine rowdy great-grandchildren; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Family was everything to John.
Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 8, 2025, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Parkersburg with Very Rev. Sebastian E. Devasya, VE presiding. The McCarthy family will receive friends 11:00 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church.
