John Henry Meck

John Henry Meck, Jr., passed away on January 12, 2025, at the Currituck Health and Rehab Center. He was 78 years old, having been born on June 24, 1946, in Newport News, VA.
John began his career as a police officer for the City of Newport News, eventually transitioning to banking. He retired after many years as a computer programmer at James Madison University and continued to work as a consultant in Information Technology for several years following his retirement. His commitment to service extended beyond his career, as he honorably served his country in the United States Navy.
John was a dedicated member of both Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Grandy and Vision of Hope Methodist Church in Harrisonburg. His lifelong commitment to service was further highlighted by his involvement with Hose Company #4 in Rockingham County. After retiring, John devoted sixteen years to working at athletic events for James Madison University, where he cherished the camaraderie of his coworkers and the friendships he formed.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Catherine Alexander Meck; sons, John H. Meck, III (Amy) and Michael A. Meck; grandson, John (Jack) H. Meck, IV; and sisters, Sharon O'Neal and Sheryl Hall. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Meck, Sr. and Virginia Worrell Meck; sister, Elizabeth Barnard; and brothers, Robert Meck and William Meck.
John will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to his family and his unwavering service to his nation and community.
