John "Jack" Murphy of Marshfield passed away on October 9, 2024 at the age of 70. Beloved husband of the late Sandra A. (Reed) Murphy, he was the loving father of Amanda Murphy of Kingston, Jenna (Michael) Caron of Marshfield, and John D. "Jake" (Kayti) Murphy of Pembroke and grandfather of Michael, Colin, Cameron, and Ramona.
Jack grew up in Marshfield along the South River. Here began his lifelong love of the water, outdoors, boating, and fishing. He was a hockey and football player for Marshfield High School and a lifelong fan of the Bruins and Patriots. He graduated from MHS in 1971 and became an ironworker with the Local 7. After walking the iron for a few years, Jack went into the office to run the family business; a business that went on to erect steel for notable buildings in Boston such as the TD Garden (formerly the Fleet Center) and the Convention Center. He loved to proudly point out these and others when driving with the family through the city.
Not long after starting his career, Jack met the love of his life, Sandi. They were married in 1979 and quickly started their family. Weekends were often spent on the Four Queens, the boat they shared with Sandi's sister Wendy and her husband Greg. They would take the families on trips to catch flounder, watch whales, and see the fireworks in Boston on the Fourth of July.
He even jumped in the water and swam with a humpback whale. Jack could often be found at his kid's sporting events and extra curriculars. He enjoyed family vacations and camping trips. He especially liked captaining a sailboat during repeated couples' trips to sail around the Virgin Islands.
In his later years Jack had fun playing cards, going for coffee with family and friends, and going for drives by the beach and harbor. He delighted in watching his grandsons, Michael, Collin, and Cameron play and grow. He was especially excited at the birth of the princess of the family, his granddaughter Ramona. Though he was ever the stubborn Irishman, Jack was generous, funny, and a loving family man. He was a man with many friends and would bump into someone he knew almost everywhere he went. He will be greatly missed by many.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024 from Noon to 3:00 PM at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street in Marshfield. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack's memory can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, online at: https://www.stjude.org/
