John C. Roberto, of Wickliffe, Ohio, took his final cruise on Saturday, March 1st, 2025, at the age of 80, leaving behind a lifetime of roaring engines, grease-stained hands, and a legacy built on horsepower and precision. A master of fast engines and meticulous craftsmanship, he poured his heart into every car he touched-especially his prized 1931 Model A Coupe, known by all as the Rat's Nest.
Born to Anthony D. Roberto and Rose M. Roberto (née Errigo, both deceased) as an only child, he loved his big Italian family, strengthened by 24 aunts and uncles. For him, family reunions were like a car meet-plenty of food, stories, and cousins showing off their Hot Rods.
He began his career as an auto mechanic at Sears Automotive in Richmond Mall, where he built more than just engines-he built a brotherhood. The friends he made became the brothers he never had, bound by grease, gears, and a love of Hot Rods. Even after the shop closed, their bond never wavered, staying connected through car shows, lunch gatherings, and the roar of an engine.
He leaves behind his daughters from his first three marriages, Rounette C. Roberto, Dina M. Pistone, and Desiree L. Roberto, who will forever remember his high expectations, love of Hot Rods, and ever-changing co-pilots in life. His legacy also lives on through his grandchildren, Joseph A. Roberto (Bryanna), Marisa A. Matic (Luka), Hayley A. Lhotka (Jeremy), Antonio J. Haley, Dominic A. Haley, Zachary B. Haley, and Carsen A. Whitlow, as well as his great-grandchildren, Brantley Roberto, Grant Roberto, Camila Matic, William Haley, Harper Haley, and Baby Lhotka.
A celebration of his life-and, of course, his love for classic cars-will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 9th, 2025, at McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 6330 Center Street (rt. 615, N. of Rt. 2), Mentor. In his honor, classic cars are welcome-weather permitting, of course-and stories of his unforgettable ways are encouraged.
Keep the engines running and the chrome shining, Pop-you've got the best garage in the sky.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family.
