John Michael Savage, Sr., 85, passed away at his home in Austin, Texas, on February 11, 2026. Born on December 24, 1940, in New York City, John lived a life defined by service, integrity, and deep devotion to his family.

He attended St. Dominic's High School in Oyster Bay, New York, before continuing his education at Boston College and Fordham University School of Law. Following his studies, John proudly served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division.

John practiced law in both New York and Greenville, North Carolina, dedicating his career to defending the rights of others. He worked on six capital cases and served in the Pitt County Public Defender's Office, where he became known for his steadfast commitment to justice and tireless advocacy on behalf of his clients.

A devoted husband, John shared 35 years of marriage with his wife, Barbara, who preceded him in death in 2004. Later in life, he moved to Austin, Texas, to be closer to his son and grandchildren, Amelia and Emmett, who were truly the light of his life.

An avid reader, devoted father, and doting grandfather, John will be remembered for his keen intellect, unwavering sense of justice, and the warmth, wisdom, and joy he brought to those who knew him.

He is survived by his son, John Savage, Jr.; his grandchildren, Amelia and Emmett Savage of Austin, Texas; his sister, Regina Grant of Haymarket, Virginia; his sister-in-law, Sarah Wheless of Hillsborough, North Carolina; and beloved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Legal Aid of North Carolina to support access to justice for those in need: https://legalaidnc.org/
