John Allen "Jack" Sedam, 86, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, in Marysville, Pennsylvania. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, Jack lived a life marked by kindness, curiosity, and quiet strength.
Born on May 23, 1939, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Jack was the son of Shirley Snyder Sedam and John Bailey Sedam. He graduated from Susquenita High School in the class of 1957 and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Penn State University. His passion for learning led him to further his education with a master's degree from Edinboro University.
Jack served his country with honor as a member of the Air Force National Guard. During the Berlin Crisis, he was called to active duty and stationed in Germany as a communications specialist. He was honorably discharged in 1962.
Professionally, Jack dedicated his career to helping others through his work with the State Department of Labor and Industry. As an Occupational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR), he supported individuals in achieving greater independence and purpose through meaningful employment.
Jack was a man of many passions. He found joy and peace on the water-sailing was one of his greatest loves. He spent countless cherished hours at his beloved cottage at Ferncliff Beach in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he worked tirelessly over the years to maintain and improve it. His appreciation for music ran deep; he especially loved symphonies and choral works as well as classic jazz standards. Jack also had a lifelong fascination with science and technology and enjoyed working with machinery-particularly when it came to tinkering with his cars.
Animals held a special place in Jack's heart. Throughout his life, he cared for several pet cats who brought him great comfort and companionship. His gentle nature extended to all living things-he had an innate ability to connect with both animals and children alike.
Above all else, Jack was deeply devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer Estes Schneider; sons Jeffrey Snyder Sedam, Steven Cushing Sedam, and Sean Allen Sedam; stepdaughters Sarah Elaine Ausmus and Alison Nicole Schneider; and grandchildren Jay, Warren, Nicholas, Ellen, Willow, Harrison, Ava, Jenna, Isabella, and Toby.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Nancy Elizabeth Sedam; and leaves behind a legacy of integrity that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
In remembrance of Jack's love for sailing and maritime heritage, the family suggests donations be made to the Bayfront Maritime Center at 40 Holland Street, Erie PA 16507 or online at bayfrontcenter.org.
May Jack's memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting tribute to a life well lived.
