John A Sorensen passed away June 10 at his home cared for by his daughters. John was born in the Dorchester section of Boston on May 27, 1935 to George and Lucy Waddingham Sorensen.
As a young man he became a baker and worked in several donut shops in the the Boston area before moving to Pittsfield to work at a Dunkin Donuts in Coltsville with his brother in law Jack Doherty.
He went on with his wife Patricia to establish his own business,Sodies Donuts, located on Dalton Avenue. Anyone that went to the camps in Hinsdale back in the late 1960's and early 70's might remember how delicious they were.
After he and Patricia divorced he moved to New Hampshire. There he met and later married Huguette Phillips. Together along with Huguette's children they built his dream log home from the foundation up. He and Huguette enjoyed their home and gardens until Huguette's death in 2017. A year later in 2018 he moved back to Hinsdale to be closer to his family.
John leaves his daughter Debra Larkin and her fiance Stephen Calcasola who cared for him at his home for the last 9 months, Mary Sorensen and her wife Kristie Dymtryshyn of Pittsfield, Patrice Tremblay of Pittsfield, and Robert Sorensen of South Carolina. He also leaves his step children John Phillips of Florida, Jean Mills and Julie Beals of New Hampshire.
He also leaves his grandchildren Patrick, Christina, Amber, Alice, Colin, Sean, and his great grandchildren Hunter, Bella, Julianna, Tristan, Rune, Scarlett, Colton and Oakley.
John's son Joseph J Sorensen predeceased him in 2005. Also, he was the last of his siblings which included Christian, George, Robert, Marie and Helen. He was especially close to Uncle Bob who passed last September. They talked every day and our Dad missed him terribly. He also leaves many nieces and nephews whom he loved. He was always close to our cousins Jimmy and Cheryl Doherty of Manassas Virginia, who made the time to visit with him whenever they returned.
Lastly, we would like to acknowledge the unmeasurable gratitude we have for the Visiting Nurses of the Berkshires (especially Robyn and Cindy) and HospiceCare in the Berkshires (thank you Amanda and Missy); both helped us keep Dad at home with compassion and the utmost care. Please consider a donation to these organizations in lieu of flowers.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral home services will be held, Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford St, PITTSFIELD. Calling hours will precede the service from 12 to 2 p.m.
