John Charles Strausbaugh, 83, of Camden, DE passed away on March 23, 2025 at the Hospice Center in Milford, DE after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. His loving wife Patricia (Pam) was by his side. John was born on December 28, 1941 in Baltimore, MD to the late John A. and Marie G. Strausbaugh.
John was a 1960 graduate of Patterson Park High in Baltimore. Known as "Rug" or "Rughead" throughout his life, John was a member of the JV baseball team and played various sports in his spare time. John, always a hard worker since the age of 14, worked various odd jobs after graduation until he enlisted in the Army in 1961. John served with the 52nd Engineering Company in France achieving the rank of Specialist 5. He was honorably discharged in 1964.
Although he was encouraged by his "Sarge" to re-up, John chose to return home to Baltimore because he "had a feeling". Shortly after returning home, he met "the love of his life", Pam. John and Pam were married for 57 years.
John was a letter carrier with the USPS in the Baltimore area for 33 years. He also served as a shop steward. Upon moving to Camden, John was employed by Sam's Club in Dover, where he worked in the produce department and loved interacting with customers. He retired from Sam's Club after 19 years.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, Patricia "Pam" Strausbaugh, John is survived by his daughter Melanie (Brian) of Bear, DE and his son Eric (Lisa) of Hanover, VA. John is also survived by his grandchildren Brittany (Anthony), Matthew (Kaitlyn), Megan (Nathan), Timothy (Hannah), Aidan, Ryan (Monica), Lauryn (Brennen) and seven great-grandchildren: Benet, Elowyn, Linus, Dorothy, Finley, Hannah, and Adalynn. He is also survived by his sisters Mary Kioussis and Loretta Commodari (Marshall) of Baltimore, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his eldest sister Monica Zollenhoffer.
John, a faithful servant of Christ, served in many capacities at his church communities in Baltimore and Dover. Two of his most memorable ways of serving were as a Youth Director in Baltimore and most recently as a Stephen's Minister at St. John's Lutheran.
John loved sports and enjoyed playing softball in his younger years. He loved the Baltimore Orioles! Although he was saddened by the loss of the Baltimore Colts, he quickly became a huge fan of the Baltimore Ravens.
John was a coach for Pikesville Little League in Baltimore in the 1970s. He was also a leader in the Boy Scouts of America, ultimately serving as a Scoutmaster.
John also enjoyed fishing, especially taking his grandchildren on fishing adventures while vacationing at the Maryland and Delaware beaches. His favorite childhood memory was riding the rails with his father, an employee of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.
Visitation will take place on March 29, 2025 from 10:00 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. at St.John's Lutheran Church 113 Lotus Street Dover, DE 19901. A Celebration of Life will immediately follow at 11:30 A.M. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St.John's Lutheran Church at the above address or to Delaware Hospice 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
