Rev. Dr. John C. Stube entered the glorious realm of heaven on Monday, July 15, 2024 at his daughter's residence at the age of 73. John C. Stube was born on January 27, 1951 and raised in northern Idaho in the town of Moscow, enjoying all the benefits of the great outdoors in the Rocky Mountains. He was the son of Oscar and Alice (Carlson) Stube who both preceded him in death.
Following his graduation from high school, he graduated with an undergraduate degree in Bacteriology/Ecology from the University of Idaho (fresh water ecology) and then with a graduate degree in Microbial Ecology from Utah State University (hyper-saline ecosystems).
Following a stint with a USDA research laboratory, he entered Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN to study for the Holy Ministry. Following graduation, John was a Pastor for in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod for 37 years serving Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Richfield, Utah; Trinity and Ascension Lutheran Churches in Rangely and Meeker, Colorado; St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Provo, Utah; and finally Ascension Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana where he served from 1989 – 2018. During his time at Ascension, Pastor Stube was able to continue his studies and earned a doctorate in New Testament Biblical Studies from the University of Durham, England, in 2002.
John enjoyed outdoor sports, especially bird hunting and fishing, and was an avid reader of western Americana and historical biographies. As he became a grandparent, he discovered the joys provided by being active in their lives.
John was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Sarah Ann in 1990. He is survived by his daughter, Katie (Cam) Mere of Decatur, Indiana and two grandchildren, Jacqueline Alice Mere and Calvin John Mere also of Decatur. Additionally, his sister, Judy Donovan (Bill) of Independence, Oregon also survives.
Funeral services for Rev. Dr. John Stube will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 19, 2024 at the Ascension Lutheran Church, 8811 St. Joe Rd, Fort Wayne, IN 46835 with Pastor James Gier; Pastor Gary Zieroth; and Rev. Dr. Dan Gard officiating. Burial will follow the services at Concordia Cemetery Gardens in Fort Wayne.
Friends and family will be received on Thursday, July 18, 2024 from 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. at the Ascension Lutheran Church and also on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, Pastor Stube's family would ask that memorials may be made to: Ascension Lutheran School or to the Ascension Lutheran Church Bell Tower Fund and can be sent to Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, 520 N. 2nd Street, Decatur, IN 46733.
